First, there were those marginal Hollywood movies that Johnny Depp made and which, although they never made it into the mainstream of box-office hits, managed to consolidate his reputation as a wonderful actor, one of the few with a genuine ability to shift from character to character in such a way as to leave true fans bewildered.
Then, there came this great move, inspired from one of Disney's biggest journey, the 'Pirates of the Caribbean'. One movie was made and took the world by storm. The sequel was released this year, proving to be even bigger than the first one, and a third part is closing to wrap up production as we speak.
The 'Pirates' franchise did nothing else than show the world that Johnny Depp can be more than a great actor: he can also be a great actor whom audiences simply adore. And, yet, here he goes again, amazing us with that ability I was telling you about at the beginning, going from wacky Captain Jack Sparrow, the funny and lovable pirate, to Freddie Mercury, the ultimate god of rock.
Although the project is still underway and Depp's participation in it is not yet confirmed, there is one thing clear: Queen guitarist Brian May is in talks with the actor about him taking on the part. The biopic is funded via Robert De Niro's Tribeca Productions and May confirmed to all Queen fans that Depp is more than likely to play the part of Freddie.
'Discussions are at an early stage. He [Johnny] would be a worthy counterpart for Freddie on screen. I don't think I can say any more right now.', May wrote on his official website. However, he refused to reveal anything more about the project that will tell the story of the singer. But we'll keep you posted with more details, as they come up.
