Yesterday, a nastily delicious rumor started making the rounds on the Internet: it involved one of the hottest, most talented actors of the moment and a brand of condoms. Need we say more? According to some sources, Johnny Depp was said to have been approached by the Magnum and asked to front their new campaign for their "Trojan" brand of condoms. This rumor opened up enticing prospects for Depp's fans of both sexes, who immediately started fantasizing about huge billboards depicting their favorite star in rather compromising positions and maybe flashing David Beckham-style, digitally enhanced crotch. However, all their dreams were mercilessly quashed today, when Depp's representative denied such an offer ever being taken into account by the actor.
It's easy to see how such a rumor may have surfaced - and it's not all wishful thinking, although we have to admit that most of Depp's dedicated fans would sure like a closer look at their idol's more private parts. It's a well known fact, however, that Depp has long advocated safe sex education, and it's hard to find a bigger promoter of safe sex than a company which markets condoms. Magnum is also involved in an anti-AIDS campaign and is currently planning to send free condoms to third world countries to prevent the alarming spread of the disease. Depp therefore has the right background - and the right looks - to inspire such a rumor. Add this to the wishful thinking and we have ourselves an alluring collaboration that never happened.
Depp's representative stated that "there is no truth to this. He has not been approached." And while this can't possibly be good news for any of the actor's over-enthusiastic fans, the best thing to do is do your best to not feel depressed - and don't give up hope. Of course, not every actor in Hollywood has David Beckham's confidence in their own looks and public appeal - and Depp has never been a narcissist of Beckham's caliber. However, modern-day advertising is so complex and diverse a business that we can never know anything for sure. So there is still hope - fingers crossed and stay tuned for all the latest Depp news.
