Johnny Depp explains absence from “Mortdecai” press event by saying he was attacked by a chupacabra

Johnny Depp is now in Japan promoting “Mortdecai,” his most recent film that opened to disastrous box office results and reviews back home in the US. Rumor has it that the studio is hoping that Depp’s still very strong Asian fanbase will help them recoup some of the losses with “Mortdecai,” so he must be on his best behavior during this promotional visit.

The other day, Depp missed a press conference, but before the media started to speculate on the reason he might have had for not showing up, he delivered the perfect excuse during a photocall the next day: he had been attacked by a chupacabra.

You can hear his explanation in the video below, courtesy of the Daily Mail, which also reports that Depp told reporters that the chupacabra must have traveled with him from the States, hidden in his luggage.

“I fought with it for hours. They're very persistent, very mean,” he said. “And I'm pretty sure it came into my suitcase. I threw him off the 23rd floor. So we'll never see him again. Thank you for understanding.”

This part isn’t included in the video below. However, what is included is the real explanation as well: Depp had come down with the flu and he was in no condition to attend a press event, for which he duly apologized.

In the end, Johnny did right by his loyal fans.
