Johnny Depp has a new movie out in theaters now, the critically panned “The Rum Diary.” The film opened in the US a few days ago and has registered so far less than stellar grossing, but Depp has an explanation for that: the Americans just don't get his movies.

Sitting down with The Guardian for an extensive interview, Depp manages to put his foot in his mouth once more, by offending his fans and cinema audiences in general in the US.

As the interviewer points out to him that “The Rum Diary” hasn't been performing at the box office as expected – in fact, it's considered one of his biggest flops to date – he stresses that he doesn't care about money.

Making a movie means taking a shot in the dark, the actor says.

“No, God no, no. It’s always a crap shoot, and really if you have that in your head while you’re making a movie the process would become something very different. No, I couldn’t give a rat’s [expletive] really, not really,” he says of not wanting to make money off his films.

However, he also has another explanation for why “The Rum Diary” did so badly in the US: it's because of the audience, who is simply not intelligent enough to appreciate it.

“Most definitely,” Depp says when the interviewer asks him whether he thinks the film will perform better in Europe than it did in the US.

“It’s something that will be more appreciated over here, I think. Cos it’s – well, I think it’s an intelligent film. [He leaves a meaningful pause.] And a lot of times, outside the big cities in the States, they don’t want that,” Johnny explains.

That Depp doesn't like Hollywood and everything that goes with showbiz is not a secret: he didn't move to France for no reason, even though he's not yet ready to give up his American citizenship.

However, this is the first time that he insults his fans there by saying the only reason they didn't go to see the movie was because it was too intelligent for them.

In the same interview, Depp also reveals how he really feels about celebrity and living in LA.

“In Los Angeles, the hoity toities, the beautiful people, will sit on Sunset Strip and have their meal at these kind of fancy restaurants where no one can smoke – but you can inhale car fumes all you like. I mean, that to me says it all…” he says.
