Despite rumors to the contrary, Johnny Depp has still not married his girlfriend of many years and the mother of his children, Vanessa Paradis. In a recent interview, the actor makes it clear that he doesn’t believe in marriage – in the traditional sense of the word.
While other famous couples, including Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, have said they would not tie the knot until their gay friends can also do the same legally, Johnny simply doesn’t believe in the marriage institution.
As he sees it, a paper is just a piece of paper and doesn’t mean anything more or less for the two people whose name happens to be on it, he says in a recent interview cited by
AceShowbiz.
Because of this, he won’t be marrying Vanessa anytime soon. Plus, her last name is simply too gorgeous to have her change it, even if it were to call her Paradis-Depp, the actor jokes.
“I never found myself needing that piece of paper. Marriage is really from soul to soul, heart to heart. You don’t need somebody to say, okay, you’re married,” the actor says.
This is not the first time that he says that, once two people love each other and determined to last through thick and thin together, in his eyes, they’re as good as married.
However, the joke about Vanessa’s last name is new.
“If Vanessa wanted to get hitched, why not?” Depp says. “But the thing is, I’d be so scared of ruining her last name. She’s got such a good last name,” the actor adds.
