Meanwhile, Amber Heard looked spectacular in Giambattista Valli Haute Couture

At Monday’s MET Gala 2014, several A-list couples walked the red carpet outside the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, but perhaps no other had taken the theme of the night – old-school glamor, preferably in black and white – quite as seriously as Johnny Depp and his fiancée Amber Heard.

The two actors, who reportedly became romantically involved while shooting “The Rum Diary” when Depp was still with longtime partner Vanessa Paradis, have walked red carpets together before but never one as important as this one.

You see, the MET Ball is known as the “Oscars of fashion” for a very good reason: it’s the highlight of a year in fashion both for all the major fashion houses and their respective designers, and for the biggest names in showbiz, particularly those known for their association with fashion.

Depp has always been considered one of the trendiest actors out there and, at this year’s edition of the Ball, he did not disappoint. Luckily, the theme of the night allowed him to fully indulge in his love of vintage, even opting for a cane that, Us Weekly believes, made him resemble Mr. Peanut a bit.

“Johnny Depp went all out for the 2014 Costume Institute Gala in New York City on Monday, May 5, walking the red carpet with fiancée Amber Heard in a formal black tux, complete with Tails and a black cane, a la Mr. Peanut,” says the e-zine, adding that he accessorized “with spectator spats, white gloves, a gold pocket watch dangling from his waist, and tinted glasses.”

Depp obeyed Anna Wintour’s black and white theme, but Amber not so much. Even so, she looked absolutely divine in a Giambattista Valli Haute Couture silk gown with intricate embroidery, which she paired with diamonds by Fred Leighton, a bold red lip and a strict updo.

Of course, the giant engagement ring she got from Depp was clearly visible on her hand and, though some celebrity pundits noted that she looked as if she was the exact opposite of “thrilled” to be there, she smiled brightly for all the photos.

Depp was probably wearing his own engagement ring, also known as “mangagement ring” or his “chick’s ring” as he calls it, but we can’t tell for sure from the photos available online. He was first photographed with it during the “Transcendence” press tour and he later confirmed that it was an engagement ring and that, indeed, he and Amber were to be married.

Above is a photo of the gorgeous couple on the red carpet.
