“Spider-Man 4” has currently hit a rough patch, with production being halted indefinitely until several, unmentioned issues are being worked out. Even if the film is a no-go right now, it would certainly seem that casting still continues, with John Malkovich being the latest star attached to the fourth installment of Spidey, as Collider can confirm.

Even if the actor himself confirmed the rumor to an Italian television network, rumors in the blogosphere talked of his involvement in “Spider-Man 4” long before that. In all fairness, they said he would be taking on the villain in the film, the Vulture, but that’s an aspect Malkovich would rather he kept mum about, the aforementioned movie-oriented publication says. As of now, all that is known is that the actor is attached to the project in some capacity or another.

“‘Spider-Man 4 has a number of things still up in the air, including the recent delay of shooting and who will be the villain(s) in the upcoming Sam Raimi superhero flick. Today, things got a bit clearer, as John Malkovich talked with ‘Quelli Che il Calcio,’ an Italian soccer TV show, about his involvement in the film. Badtatse.it reports that while Malkovich did not deny he would play the role of the Vulture, he did confirm that he was waiting for the script. Malkovich added that he hoped filming would begin soon,” Collider writes.

“While the clip itself is still being sought, this news certainly confirms that Malkovich will be involved [in] ‘Spider-Man 4.’ We can only assume that the hot rumor of Malkovich as the Vulture is all but set in stone. However, what isn’t clear is what this means for the other potential villains in the film. Recent casting rumors had pegged Anne Hathaway in the role of the Black Cat (Felicia Hardy). That was, until we were all thrown a curve-ball with news that Hathaway would actually be playing a new character: ‘The Vultress.’” the same publication goes on to say.

As we were also informing you a while back, Anne Hathaway has officially been confirmed for a part on “Spider-Man 4,” though details are very sketchy as to what that might be. All these rather confusing rumors aside, it would certainly seem that the cast for the fourth film in the franchise is shaping up very nicely. If Malkovich gets to play the villain, then all the better, fans are saying on dedicated forums. Keep an eye on this space to see what becomes of this.
