John Lennon's original draft of the lyrics to "A Day In The Life" song went on sale starting Tuesday, after 39 years, the auction house Bonhams announced.
"The manuscript will be sold in a sealed-bid auction ending March 7", Bonhams said.
"A Day In The Life," which begins "I read the news today oh boy," was inspired by the Daily Mail of Jan. 17, 1967 and is considered one of Lennon's and Paul McCartney's masterpieces and a groundbreaking work in pop music history.
It was recorded for the Beatles album "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" later that year.
The single sheet of handwritten lyrics being auctioned includes the first two complete drafts of Lennon's contribution to the song.
It was sold by the estate of Beatles road manager Mal Evans for $100,000 at Sotheby's in London in 1992. The family of the collector who bought it then is selling it now. Bonhams, a British auctioneer with offices in New York and the West Coast, did not identify the seller.
Lennon said he wrote his segment of the song after reading two newspaper articles including one about the death of Tara Browne, the heir to the Guinness fortune and friend of the Beatles.
