Actor says being a couch potato was very taxing

In June, actor John Goodman stunned the media and even his fellow actors when he put on a public appearance looking completely different than he had just months before. In other words, he’d lost a lot of weight after he realized he had grown tired of being defined by his weight, being picked on in the media because of it and, most importantly, endangering his health.

Speaking with People magazine, the actor reveals that he actually lost an incredible 100 pounds and that he did this the hard way: by cutting out all unhealthy and calorie-laden foods, and breaking a sweat. He couldn’t have done it though without the help of health coach Mackie Shilstone, who taught him how to turn his life around by learning which foods to eat and how to workout to shed the pounds – and keep them off.

“John Goodman is no longer a couch potato. ‘I know it sounds sappy, but it was a waste,’ the 58-year-old actor tells People. ‘It takes a lot of creative energy to sit on your [backside] and figure out what you’re going to eat next... I wanted to live life better.’ Mission accomplished: The Treme actor has lost more than 100 lbs. thanks to his healthy new lifestyle. He quit drinking three years ago and hired Mackie Shilstone – a health coach who has trained many athletes including tennis player Serena Williams. Now Goodman has cut sugar from his diet and works out six days a week. ‘I’m breaking a sweat but I’m not going nuts,’ he says,” People writes.

“He is excited about the results though, says Shilstone. ‘He remembers what it feels like to be extremely heavy and it’s something he doesn’t want again.’ Now, says Shilstone, ‘John is very agile. When I see him running I get out of the way! He can be a different type of actor now. He can take on athletic parts.’ Before Goodman becomes an action hero, though, he needs to focus on getting a new wardrobe. ‘I just ordered some nice slacks,’ he says. ‘I finally got them and they’re too big now’,” the same report further reads.

As we also noted back in June, when Goodman first unveiled his much slimmer body, the actor has often been targeted in the media for his obesity and his smoking habit because he used both to send the wrong message to fans. Safe to say, he doesn’t have to worry about the former anymore.
