John Carmack has revealed that Doom 4 may not be as far away as it may seem. Apparently, the long development cycle behind Rage has helped the studio cope with the new technology it has created, drastically shortening the turnout time for the new installment in the Doom series.

Doom 4, the latest horror shooter that is to come from legendary studio id Software, is already under heavy development, as the outfit has a full team working on it.

Asked by the UK version of the Official PlayStation Magazine, via That Video Game Blog, whether the fans will a PlayStation 3 version of Doom4, Carmack replied that, “Well we’ve got Doom 4 going on right now below our feet here.”

He continued to comment that, “..the Doom team are all sped up and working on this technology base – I’m not really at liberty to discuss much about it, but it’s going full steam ahead right now.”

Furthermore, because of the teams experience with id Tech 5, “[Doom 4] shouldn’t take as long to ship as Rage. It’s already in the pipeline and we feel good about it.”

No clear release date, but it is still good news for the company's fans. It is easy to imagine that once Rage is done, the company will concentrate its full efforts on Doom 4, making the release date of the game closer than anyone thinks right now.

A recent Tweet posted by Carmack on the micro-blogging platform is also pointing to the fact the Doom 4 may be finally ready for a first look.

On his Twitter account, the legendary programmer has written that, “I'm showing something neat and unannounced at quakecon tomorrow. Deciding if I should leave it be or sneak a little more code in... ”

It was already known that Doom 4 was in development, but it will be nice to get a glimpse of the plans id Software has in store for the next installment in one of the series that has defined the first person shooter genre.
