J.J. Abrams did a fine job with the two “Star Trek” movies from 2009 and 2013 but, because he’s also agreed to direct “Star Wars VII,” he won’t be able to return to the franchise for the third one. One director now being considered to replace him is Joe Cornish.

If the name doesn’t ring a bell, it’s ok because Cornish has only recently attained worldwide fame with a little gem called “Attack the Block,” a new take on the alien invasion that he wrote and directed. If you haven’t seen it yet, you’ve been missing out.

Cornish has also worked as screenwriter on various other huge projects, and is already directing a new movie for Paramount, the novel adaptation “Snow Crash.”

This explains why Paramount is seriously considering him to replace Abrams, Deadline reports. He might be relatively new to the scene, but it looks like movie studio bosses think he has what it takes to tackle such a huge project as “Star Trek.”

And huge it is, make no mistake: not only is the franchise working with a considerable budget and big names, but must also accomplish the almost impossible feat of pleasing the Trekkies, the loyal fans of the franchise.

At this point, Cornish seems like a huge risk for Paramount to take but, after having seen “Attack the Block,” maybe he’s just the man for such a huge undertaking.
