I had no idea this was the "coming out of the closet" week. Only a couple of days ago, I was telling you about another celebrity haunted by years of gay rumors, who ended up (ironically, I would say) outed by his skin-care beautician. I'm talking about Ricky Martin, of course, and in the end, although the singer himself has not so far reacted to the statements that put him on the list of confirmed gay stars, his silence may be just as meaningful as a statement of confirmation. In the end, he hasn't vehemently denied the rumors, maybe because he's relieved the truth is finally out "officially" and he can finally stop playing hide-and-seek with the rest of the world.
Things are a bit different when it comes to Jodie Foster, an actress of extraordinary talent who always guarded her private life very fiercely and always resolutely denied discussing her sexuality. However, she surprisingly decided to break the silence as she attended an award ceremony held by the Hollywood Reporter magazine at the Beverly Hills Hotel in Los Angeles the week before. It was the first time ever that Foster made a public and not very subtle reference to her rumored partner, film producer Cydney Bernard, with whom Foster has reportedly been involved for over 15 years.
"I would like to thank my beautiful Cydney who sticks with me through all the rotten and the bliss" Foster stated as she accepted an award at the The Women in Entertainment Power 100 breakfast last week. "I feel fragile, unsure, struggling to figure it all out. I don't feel powerful, I feel like I haven't got a clue what I'm doing. Maybe that's the secret of my success, but you can't work in this industry for 42 years without being as nutty as a fruitcake", the actress also said.
Well, what can I say – good for her, finally deciding to speak the truth and quit hiding from the rest of the world. The fact is, I was thinking at the reasons for which Jodie has chosen to keep her sexual orientation under wraps for so long – probably because she felt it was her own business and quite possibly imagined that it could harm her career (since a big segment of the American audience has rather conservative views on the matter). It must be quite liberating, though, to at least hint at it – and publicly acknowledge for the first time someone who has been such a big part of your life for so long. Looking forward to hearing your reactions on this.
