Jodie Foster is 44. But one look at her photo on the cover of the latest issue of More magazine and we'd almost like to be 44 too, if it means looking like that. She seems to be radiating an air of mature happiness while still keeping some of that intent, purposeful air that won her Oscars and the admiration of a whole generation. Foster is slim, smart-looking and intensely energetic as she talks about fame, family and cosmetic surgery.

The multiple Oscar winner claims that her life has always been affected by acting, although she mentions she doesn't usually like to admit her weaknesses. But acting, she says, is an extremely lonely business for her. "Whether I like to admit it or not - and usually I don't like to admit it - the stuff I do affects me. It's this strange lonely thing. It's hard to explain what it is to lie in a pool of fake blood for four days and just be thinking those thoughts…There's a real sadness to it. So I don't want to do that more than once a year". And since this is fine by us, I have to admit she doesn't look like she'd lack things to do in the spare time she gets from filming throughout the year.

The thing that catches the eye reading Foster's interview is that she seems to defy the diva status that Hollywood might once have tried to impose on her. She just takes control of every situation she's involved in and on every topic on which her opinion is asked. This is, after all, someone who won two Oscars before she was 30 and is paid 25 millions per movie. And while this explains why she only needs to act in one movie every year, it also explains some of the tenseness in her personality - not her attitude - and that commanding presence so surprising for the slim blond with the charmingly candid eyes.

She smiles, shrugs and talks about being 44 in a nonchalant, half-ironic way that makes you realize that she's having the last laugh on everybody. "I think the pressure's off. The hardest part of my personal neuroses is that I feel responsible for everything. I put so much pressure on myself, and I always did as a kid. There's a nice thing about turning a certain age where you've made so many life decisions; so many non-chosen paths are behind you, and you don't have to worry about them anymore", she says. And judging from her life and career so far, we have no reason to doubt she's speaking the truth.
