A new job listing on the official Treyarch website seems to indicate that the company and publisher Activision Blizzard are aiming to bring the Call of Duty franchise to a new hardware platform.

The job ad talks about “bringing our hugely successful game to a new console.”

The actual text does not mention which hardware the very successful series might jump to next but the two companies have not yet officially announced versions of Call of Duty for the PlayStation Vita handheld from Sony, which will be launched in Japan on December 17, or for the Wii U home console from Nintendo, which will probably go on sale during the summer of 2012.

Activision has always had a policy of pushing its important franchises on as many hardware platforms as possible but it is probably waiting for some initial hardware sales before committing to a launch schedule.

Of course, there's also the possibility that Treyarch is already thinking about the long term future of the Call of Duty series and looking for people that will work on next generation consoles, like the much rumored Xbox 720 from Microsoft and the PlayStation 4 from Sony.

Treyarch is not the only developer working on Call of Duty so it's not clear why it is the only one advertising positions for new console development.

Activision Blizzard has become more and more focused on extracting all the revenue it can from its main franchises, of which Call of Duty is the biggest, and has created a cluster of development studios, including Treyarch, Infinity Ward and Sledgehammer Games, who are working on it at the same time.

The aim is to get another game in the franchise out every year while keeping up the innovation quotient, especially when it comes to the multiplayer side of the game.
