This settles the mystery of the identity of the yoga instructor who won Joaquin Phoenix’s heart and has become his fiancée, because she doesn’t even exist: after shocking the world by revealing on David Letterman the other night that he was engaged to be married, the Oscar-winning actor is coming clean.

He lied about the engagement, Phoenix tells George Stephanopoulos on ABC’s Good Morning America. No, he wasn’t trolling Letterman again, he was just trying to come up with a story that would make the audience warm up to him, love him.

Somehow, the idea of lying about getting engaged seemed the perfect way to get people to like him, he admitted, as you can see in the video below. “They really like people getting married... I can get engaged again, if you like?” the actor laughed.

Joaquin Phoenix will be seen next in “Inherent Vice,” in which he plays a washed up, drunken private investigator tasked to solve a crime that puts him way out of his depth.

In 2009, the actor made international headlines with his announcement of retiring from movies to kickstart a career as a rapper. The move turned out to be just a stunt for a mockumentary called “I’m Still Here,” a cutting look inside our celebrity culture and our tendency to put stars up on a pedestal.

One interview Phoenix did at the time to promote the film, which he insisted was the real deal and not a stunt, was with Letterman, who apparently wasn’t in on the joke. It is believed that, to this day, David is upset about having his leg pulled in front of his loyal audience.

If that’s true, he won’t like hearing that Phoenix used his show to pull another stunt.
