It’s been a little over a year that Oscar nominee Joaquin Phoenix made the announcement that made many of his fans think whether he was not playing a hoax on them, namely that he was quitting acting to pursue a career in music, rap to be more specific. Though both Joaquin and his publicist insisted at the time there was no joke about the switch in careers and that it would be for an indeterminate period of time, it would seem that he’s decided to come out of retirement, as Contact Music informs.

No confirmation of this has yet been made, but fans are already ecstatic about the idea of having Joaquin back where he did so extraordinarily: in front of the camera. As we also reported on past occasions, the star experienced a fall from grace of sorts after putting on several drunken public appearances, poor live rap performances and after making himself almost unrecognizable by adopting what the media dubbed the “homeless chic” style. To have Phoenix back working as an actor would be great, it’s being said.

“Joaquin Phoenix’s rap career has been put on hold – he will return to the big screen as Edgar Allan Poe, according to Oscar-winning sound engineer Resul Pookutty. The Walk The Line actor quit Hollywood last year (09), announcing plans to focus on becoming a hip-hop star. He disappeared from the spotlight, only emerging for a string of bizarre TV interviews, which saw him sporting a scraggly beard and giving one-word replies to questions, and a couple of disastrous gigs. However, Slumdog Millionaire sound designer Pookutty has revealed Phoenix is heading back to acting to play iconic American writer and poet Poe,” Contact Music writes.

“I couldn’t be happier because I am doing a period film. It is a very special challenge because I have to recreate the sound textures of New York in 1854. It’s an adaptation of The Beautiful Cigar Girl by Daniel Stashower and based on an eerie real-life experience of author Edgar Allan Poe which happened just months before his death. Joaquin plays Edgar Allen Poe,” Pookutty is quoted as saying.

This could also mean (granted the report checks out) that the whole rapper “stage” was part of a mockumentary Joaquin Phoenix was working on with best friend and director Cassey Affleck, as rumors had it almost a year ago. However, more on that should be heard soon, should the above-mentioned info be accurate, so keep an eye on this space.
