Joan Rivers says she was held “hostage” at airport in Costa Rica over a misunderstanding

Television personality Joan Rivers kicked off the new year with quite some inconveniences, as she was detained by airport security personnel in Costa Rica and, because of it, missed her flight back home. Not only that, but she was literally held “hostage” at the airport and had no other choice but to pay her stay overnight at the hotel after she was released, TMZ reports.

“Joan Rivers claims she was ‘held hostage’ by airport security in Costa Rica yesterday – all because of a name from her past. The drama unfolded after an airport official checked out Joan’s passport and became suspicious when he noticed it read ‘Joan Rosenberg AKA Joan Rivers.’ Joan claims she tried explaining her late husband’s name was Ed Rosenberg – but the official found the whole thing fishy and gave away her seat on a flight back to Newark. Joan was [upset],” TMZ writes of the incident.

The matters only got worse after the official gave Rivers’ seat away, the same media outlet goes on to report. Police were called on the scene to try to settle the matter, but the angry star would not be appeased. Eventually, all the differences were solved and Rivers’ identity was established: but she still did not get her seat back and had to stay another night in order to catch the next flight. Presumably, the star will take action against the airline company to get her money back, along with some compensation as well.

“We’re told police were called to the scene – but Joan never got her seat back. Rivers claims she was forced to put herself up in a hotel overnight to wait for another light out this morning. We’re told the passport situation was eventually resolved and this morning Joan got on a plane – but as you could imagine... she ain’t happy about it,” TMZ says.

Neither Joan Rivers nor a spokesperson for the airport was immediately available for comment at the time of writing. Should she decide to take action, rest assured you’ll find out about it here.
