The unofficial investigation in the case of Joan Rivers' sudden death concluded yesterday, thanks to insiders' reports, that she was killed by an unscheduled biopsy performed by a yet-unnamed doctor who claimed to have “seen something” on her vocal chords. When he went in to operate, the patient's vocal chords seized and thus cut off her air supply.

Today, the Daily Star reports that the family is now planning on suing the private clinic where Joan Rivers went into cardiac and respiratory arrest and it is said that they are aiming for a multi-million dollar sum. A source is quoted as saying that this “could be one of the biggest medical negligence claims in history.”

An unscheduled biopsy reportedly ended in tragedy for Joan

Insiders from the clinic told how a certain outside doctor, who had arrived with Joan's entourage and who called himself a throat, ear and nose doctor, noticed “something” on Joan's vocal chords and asked to do a biopsy to determine what it was.

The insiders have added that such a procedure is usually only done in a hospital since they are the only ones equipped to handle an emergency situation. It was also mentioned that Joan never signed off on the biopsy, only the endoscopy that was aimed at repairing some damage on her vocal chords.

The family is now seeking legal action against the clinic

The actress and comedienne later died in hospital on September 4, never having recovered from the surgery. Her family was by her side in her private room at the Mount Sinai Hospital in New York when she passed at the age of 81.

As the family now seeks to get justice for the illegal procedure done by an unauthorized doctor, “which is a big no-no” according to the same sources inside the private clinic, there is also an ongoing investigation by the Health Department, trying to determine if there were complications in the case.

However, this is merely a review of the clinic as a whole, and not a formal investigation of the doctor who performed the surgery. At this point, there has been no criminal investigation launched and no charges have been brought on anyone.

Fans were devastated by the news of Joan's passing and some of them took it upon themselves to exact justice (in their eyes) by sending threatening phone calls to the clinic. This sparked the adding of additional security at the Yorkville Endoscopy clinic in Manhattan, as well as sending the workers home early every day.
