53-year-old Republican Mississippi legislator Jessica Upshaw has died on Sunday, March 24, in what preliminary reports classify as a suicide.

The Diamondhead, Hancock County politician's body has been recovered in Simpson County, The Clarion Ledger posts.

According to sources quoted by Mississippi News Now, she was found in a residence belonging to ex-Mississippi State Rep. Clint Rotenberry, in an outlying area of Mendenhall.

Simpson County Sheriff Kenneth Lewis has stated that Upshaw was killed by a gunshot wound to the head, which she may have caused herself.

“It appeared she had a gunshot wound to her head; it appeared to be self inflicted. [...] Her body was found at 901 Mangum Street.

“We arrived on the scene around 2 p.m. this afternoon (Sunday). We usually assist Mendenhall P. D.,” Lewis explains.

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation has not confirmed the cause of death until now, and spokesman Warren Strain has described on Sunday that the inquiry is still in its early stages.

“The crime scene unit is processing the residence, and the investigators are conducting interviews and following leads. It would be premature to make any statement regarding the investigation at this point,” he notes.

The 9-year District 95 representative's death has left a dent, and Republican and Democrat legislators alike have expressed their condolences to Upshaw's loved ones.

“I have known Jessica for many years as an unselfish and dedicated public servant. This is a tragic loss for her family and all Mississippians, and our thoughts and prayers go out to her family during this difficult time,” said Mississippi‎ Governor Phil Bryant.

“Once again this session, the House has been touched by tragedy. Representative Jessica Upshaw was an outstanding legislator and friend.

“She was one of the brightest and most competent members of the House. Our hearts break for her family, and our prayers go out to them during this tragic,” House Speaker Philip Gunn adds in a statement.
