Report says Jessica Simpson paid for her engagement ring, Eric didn’t have the money to buy it

Jessica Simpon is engaged to NFL player Eric Johnson, whom she started dating in May this year, when he was – technically – still a married man. The announcement was made over the weekend, when Jess also showed off her engagement ring.

As we also informed you yesterday, the sparkler is a really special one: a Neil Lane creation made with a 5-carat ruby flanked by two white pear-shaped diamonds, also 5 carats.

Estimates say the ring cost about $100,000 and that Johnson searched the stores high and low until he found the perfect ring for the girl of his dreams. Or not, depending on who one believes.

According to an unnamed source speaking to PopEater, Eric didn’t actually pay for the ring – for the simple reason that he doesn’t have that kind of money at his disposal.

While he may have gone out to look for it, it was Jessica who actually forked the bill, the spy says. This, of course, is getting Simpson’s friends very worried about how irrationally she’s been acting lately.

“No way could Eric, who doesn’t have a job at the moment, afford to purchase such an expensive ring,” says the spy under the cover of anonymity.

“Yes, he made a little bit of money in the NFL and is from a wealthy family, but unless his parents helped him out, Jessica must have paid for it herself,” the same spy dishes.

What’s even worse, this report comes on the heels of another one which is also reason for concern: Jessica doesn’t want Eric to sign a prenup because, she says, she loves and trusts him completely.

When her first marriage, to Nick Lachey, which also lacked a prenup, ended, Nick walked away with an estimated $10 million of her money. Now, Jessica’s fortune, believed to be of about $100 million, may get downsized once more in the eventuality of a divorce.

“First, we find out that Jessica doesn’t want to have a prenup, and now we find out that she might have paid for her own ring. It just doesn’t feel right to me,” another family friend dishes for PopEater.

“We all want Jessica to be happy and finally find true love after all she has been through, but she doesn’t understand that in the long run if she pays for everything it will hurt her relationship with any man,” the source adds.
