Jesse Eisenberg, the actor most commonly known for his portrayal of social media guru Mark Zuckerberg in the Oscar-winning “Social Network,” has just landed one of the most coveted roles in superhero-inspired movies.

Director Zack Snyder has confirmed that Eisenberg will be playing the criminal mastermind Lex Luthor in the upcoming “Batman vs. Superman” film which is a sequel to 2013's “Man of Steel.”

Entertaiment Weekly quotes the director as saying that, “He's a complicated and sophisticated character whose intellect, wealth and prominence position him as one of the few mortals able to challenge the incredible might of Superman. Having Jesse in the role allows us to explore that interesting dynamic, and also take the character in some new and unexpected directions.”

The British actor Jeremy Irons is billed to play Batman's butler, the trusty Alfred, a role that has previously gone to Michael Caine in the “Batman” movies where the main character was played by Christian Bale.

“Batman vs. Superman” sees Henry Cavill reprise his role as Superman, while Batman will be played by Ben Affleck, a move that proved rather controversial for fans and media. The movie, which doesn't have an official title just yet, is expected to be released in May 2016.
