Jermaine Jackson, brother of the late King of Pop Michael Jackson, has taken the necessary steps to distance himself from the Jackson name by filing a petition with a judge for a name change. It is still pending approval.

TMZ reports that Jermaine is considering legally changing his name to Jacksun for purely “artistic reasons.”

“Jermaine filed a petition for a change of name with LA County Superior Court yesterday asking for the change in nomenclature,” TMZ writes.

“In the docs, Jermaine says he wants to make the change for ‘artistic reasons’ but he does not give any further details about the move. The request has NOT yet been approved by a judge – but a hearing has been scheduled,” the same media outlet further says.

In case his petition is granted, Jermaine will have to follow certain steps to ensure the legality of the name change.

“Barring any crazy legal situations, Jermaine will be required to have his name change announced publicly several times in the next couple of months before it can be made official. A public announcement consists of having the name printed in a local publication... just like Ron Artest had to do when he changed his name to Metta World Peace,” TMZ explains.

While others would kill to be associated with the Jackson name / family, Jermaine seems eager to put some distance between himself and it.

The celebrity e-zine reached out to him for comment on the possible reasons for doing that but, so far, no word back from Jermaine.

However, a friend of the singer says for The Huffington Post that too much fuss about the change is being made because “phonetically, nothing changes.”

As far as an explanation is concerned, we should “blame it on the sunshine” but it was definitely something that Jermaine gave much thought to.
