Jennifer Lopez and her friend Leah Remini went out for a drive and good time over the weekend. The girls headed out in Jennifer's new car and seemed to be enjoying themselves, posing for selfies and then posting them on social media. Unfortunately for them, they also got into an accident.

It turns out that while they stopped at a red light on Malibu's Pacific Coast Highway, the women were rear-ended by an intoxicated driver in a pick-up truck, who then sped on. Lopez had two children in the backseat and was initially scared after the accident.

Jennifer Lopez called the police, the driver was found and charged with DUI and hit-and-run

Since the driver who caused the accident fled the scene, Jennifer called the police. Officers on the scene caught the man some distance away and was found to have been drunk. He was subsequently charged with drinking and driving, and is now facing DUI charges, as well as hit-and-run charges.

The singer later explained the incident on Instagram, by posting the selfie she and Remini took and captioning it with “Sitting at a light, Riding high right before some drunk fool rear ended us in my new whip!!!” She added “Thank god everyone ok!!! #GRATEFUL #THANKYOUGOD #DontdrinkandDrive!!!!” This was followed by a significant number of hashtags.

No one was injured in the incident, but it was enough to ruin their day out. TMZ points out that whiplash, the kind of injury usually associated with accidents of this type, takes a few days to manifest itself, so if you see Jennifer in a neck brace the next time she's out in town, you'll know why.

Whiplash settles in after a few days, so Jennifer is not really out of the woods

While a rear-ending is usually believed to be the fault of the person driving behind you, several of Jennifer's followers commented that if they weren't so busy in the car taking selfies, the accident might have been avoided.

Since we don't know the exact circumstances under which the accident happened, there is no way of telling if it could have been avoided by the fact that the women in the car showed a little more awareness to the traffic around them.

Overall, the singer didn't seem to be too scared in the incident, since she found the time to post a selfie after the accident and then make jokes about it on social media, saying “that was weird.”
