American actress Jennifer Jason Leigh slammed the British media, describing them as despicable people, who just love to print lies.
Jennifer, 43, who stared as a journalist in "Rag Tale", a romance that plays out in the splashy, sensational world of British tabloids, directed by Mary McGuckian and starring alongside "A Clockwork Orange" cult actor Malcolm McDowell, confessed she still doesn't understand the sensationalism of a newspaper office.
As she tells British film magazine Empire, "the British tabloids seem particularly horrible to me.
I think it appeals to the worst in all of us. It's so tantalizing, but so despicable. There's always an agenda - its not about what's true, it's about what sells.
It amazes me that you can basically lie, as long as somewhere buried in the piece you admit it was a hoax."
Jennifer Jason Leigh, born February 5, 1962, had her first credited role in an episode of the TV show "Baretta".
Several TV movies, including a portrayal of an anorexic in "The Best Little Girl in the World", for which Leigh lost weight to 86 lb, followed. In 1982, Leigh played a central character in director Amy Heckerling's "Fast Times at Ridgemont High".
As an adult, Leigh has gravitated towards portraying fragile, damaged or even psychotic characters. One role in this vein was that of an angry punk singer in "Georgia" (1995).
Her performance as a manipulative stage mother in "Childstar" won her a Genie Award in 2005. Because she didn't attend the ceremony, director Don McKellar accepted the award on her behalf.
