Jennifer Hudson won her first Oscar for the musical “Dreamgirls,” so here she is revisiting the genre she’s most comfortable with. Above is the first teaser trailer for the musical drama “Black Nativity.”

Starring Hudson, Tyrese Gibson, Angela Bassett, Nas, Jacob Latimore, Forest Whitaker and Mary J. Blige, the film tells the story of a struggling mother and her teenage son.

“Based on Hughes’ 1961 ‘gospel-song play’ about the birth of Jesus, writer-director Kasi Lemmons (Talk to Me) gives the story a contemporary spin and setting by exploring the coming-of-age pains of Langston (Jacob Latimore), who’s sent from Baltimore by his struggling mother (Hudson) to live with his grandparents (Forest Whitaker and Angela Bassett) in Harlem,” EW writes of the synopsis.

“Black Nativity” premieres in November and, judging by this first teaser, it’s bound to pack plenty of emotional moments and drama.
