Late last year, James Michael Tyler, who played Gunter on the immensely successful “Friends” series, was saying that he knew for a fact a feature film was in the making. Since then, Lisa Kudrow has denied the reports and nothing more was heard of the so-called project. Until now, when the National Enquirer steps forward to say that, indeed, things are moving in the right direction – towards a “Friends” film (story via here).

According to the tab, which may rank low on credibility but high in terms of breaking several major stories, actresses Jennifer Aniston and Courteney Cox Arquette are working on a script to bring the stories of the six friends on the silver screen. In setting out to do this, they have been motivated by how successful HBO’s hit show “SATC” proved to be, which saw this year the second film released to somewhat poorer reviews but still considerable commercial success.

Aside from working on a script, the two have also been giving some serious thought to who should direct the film that fans have been waiting for for so many years: and they seem to have settled on Aniston herself. “Jennifer Aniston and Courtney Cox are so jealous of the runaway success of the ‘SATC’ franchise, they’ve hatched a plan to take “Friends” to the big screen, say sources. The BFFs are working on a top secret script – and it looks like Jen may also direct the project,” the Enquirer writes.

“After years of saying no, Jen and Courteney decided the time is right for a ‘Friends’ reunion. Courteney and Jen both watched with envy as the ‘SATC’ cast parlayed their cable TV show into a massive movie success. So Jen is campaigning to make a ‘Friends’ movie finally happen. Jen is campaigning to get the series’ creators, Marta Kauffman and David Crane, to give the movie their blessing. But she’s already called the rest of the show’s cast – and they’ve all given a big thumbs up to the idea,” an inside source says for the same publication by means of confirmation.

As also noted above, talk of a feature film based on the very popular show, which has remained to this day one of the most watched and lucrative projects in television, started to gain momentum again after Tyler said he could personally confirm that a film would be made. Useless to say, fans of the show were happy to hear that – but not so much so when they saw the months went by and nothing in this sense happened.
