Though the world was shocked when Peter Facinelli and Jennie Garth announced they'd separated and would file for divorce, Jennie is now telling People magazine that the decision had been a long time coming.

In fact, Peter wanted a divorce last year, but she held out, trying to salvage the marriage.

Eventually, she realized there was no salvaging it, and agreed to the separation.

In the same interview, the former “Beverly Hills 90210” star says that trouble began when Facinelli's career took off with “Twilight,” thus unwillingly confirming reports that the film franchise really took a toll on their marriage.

She doesn't name any names or point fingers, of course, but the implication is there, word on the blogosphere has it.

“I was very resistant. I didn’t want it to happen. It took me some time to come to peace with it,” said Jennie, who is now preparing for life as a single mother and a reality star.

The first visible cracks in the marriage appeared in 2010, as Jennie and the family were living in Santa Ynez Valley, California, and Peter would be commuting from Vancouver and New York.

“He would do everything he could to fly back every weekend. [But] it took a real toll on our marriage,” Jennie explains.

Even though she didn't want to agree to end the marriage, she realized there was no other way around it.

In a way, Jennie is grateful for the life experience.

“I’ve gone through my darkest parts and I’m coming out of it. I’m okay. I don’t know what the future holds, but then I’ve never been a planner. And maybe that’s a good thing,” she explains.

The same day that Jennie's interview came out, Peter filed for divorce, TMZ reports. Incidentally, just over the weekend, they were photographed together, prompting rumors about how they might be talking to see if reconciliation was a possibility.
