David Letterman talks Jay Leno rivalry, says he’s “the most insecure person I have ever known”

David Letterman sat down for an interview with the Queen of Television herself for The Next Chapter. The episode doesn’t air until January 6, but one particular quote is already getting lots of traction online.

Not that this should surprise anyone, but Letterman also talked a bit about his longtime rival and former friend Jay Leno. Competition, it would seem, can take all forms with these two.

In his defense, even though he called Leno the “most insecure person” he’s ever met, he also had some kinds words to say about him.

“We were always friends before all of this happened. He has a way… he's an unusual fellow. I've never met anyone quite like Jay,” Letterman said, as cited by ABC News.

“And I will say, and I'm happy to say, that I think he is the funniest guy I've ever known. Just flat out, if you go to see him do his nightclub act, just the funniest, the smartest, a wonderful observationist and very appealing as a comic,” David added.

“The fact that he is also maybe the most insecure person I have ever known… I could never reconcile that,” he said.

Ouch.
