Apple has released Java for Mac OS X 10.5 Update 1. Developers are encouraged to go through the release notes, Apple says, which include a couple of known and resolved issues that may affect developers creating Java applications for Mac OS X v10.5 Leopard. The update adds support for Java SE 6, the latest release being v1.6.0_06. Apple says that the release "does not change the default version of Java" and is "only for Mac OS X v10.5.2 and later."

"This release does not change the default version of Java. This release is only for Mac OS X v10.5.2 and later, and should not be installed on earlier versions of Mac OS X. This release is for 64-bit Intel-based Macs only and cannot run on PowerPC-based or 32-bit Intel-based Macs," the documentation reads.

Java for Mac OS X 10.5 Update 1 provides several additional features, including support for AppleScript as a javax.script language, new API for altering the application Dock icon, and native support for document modal sheets.

Developers can visit the Java Reference Library for information on the features of this release. Apple further notes that any developer who wants to develop Java applications on Mac OS X v10.5 should read this document, as various issues and fixes found in this release may affect their application. Release notes also explain Java on Mac OS X v10.5 Update 1 and a few known and resolved issues.

"The Known and Resolved Issues chapter lists high visibility bugs that have been addressed in this release," Apple says. "It is not a complete listing of all of the bugs addressed. If you still have issues with any of these bugs," Apple encourages devs to file a new bug report at this website under the Java (new bugs) component, version X.

Java developers should also read the documentation on Java SE 6 and 64-bit support in Mac OS X v10.5 in order to get the most current information.
