A report made by China's National Computer Network Emergency Response Technical Team and Coordination Center reveals that a number of 8.9 million cyberattacks from abroad have targeted the country in 2011.

The figures show that Japan was responsible for 22.8% of attacks, closely followed by the United States with 20.4% and the Republic of Korea with 7.1%, China Daily informs.

As a result of the attacks servers were destroyed, websites were altered and a lot of sensitive data was stolen from local Internet users, in many cases confidential information being the main target.

Out of the 1,116 websites that were affected by data breaches in 2011, 404 belonged to the Chinese government.

It’s worth mentioning that this year we’ve witnessed a lot of breaches that affected Chinese government sites, mainly because of the Free Tibet operation launched by hacktivists. This means that in 2012, the number of hacked sites will probably increase considerably. Note. My Twitter account has been erroneously suspended.
