Super Mario Galaxy 2 is now out in Japan and the new adventure, lite on narrative and quite loaded with new tricks and gameplay mechanics that will see the beloved character drill and fly his way across stars in his search for the elusive Princess Peach, managed to take the first spot in the videogame chart in the Land of the Rising Sun.

Interestingly, the success of Super Mario Galaxy 2, exclusive to the Nintendo Wii home console, has not had too big of an impact on the hardware chart, where the PlayStation Portable handheld from Sony is still heading up the pack in terms of sales, with 25,054 units moved.

The second place also went to Sony, with its PlayStation 3 home console managing to sell 20,897 devices, coming out ahead of the Mario-powered Nintendo Wii, which only shipped 20,467 copies.

Meanwhile, the DSi LL version, with its big screen and two cameras, is still selling pretty well, moving 16,267 units to players, despite the fact that in less than a year, the maker will put out the Nintendo 3DS device. The normal DSi handheld sold 10,324, while the Xbox 360 managed 3,546 to top the DS Lite, the PlayStation 2 and the PSP Go.

Super Mario Galaxy 2 succeeded in selling 339,901 units in one week, significantly more than the game that took second place, Super Robot Taisen OG Saga: Masou Kishin - The Lord of Elemental from Namco Bandai, which moved 80,764 copies. Soccer Tsuku DS: World Challenge 2010 from SEGA for the Nintendo DS took third place with 50,164. Fourth place went to Medarot DS: Kabuto and Kuwagata Versions. Lost Planet 2 is now in sixth, followed by Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker and a Konami made football title.
