The newly launched Resident Evil 6 has managed to top the Japanese video game chart of last week, while also pushing up sales of the PlayStation 3 from Sony, which has become the best-selling piece of hardware on the market.

The PlayStation 3 has managed to sell 42,218 units during the seven-day period, which is quite an increase considering that it only managed to sell 8,935 during the previous week.

The former leader, the 3DS LL handheld, with its bigger screen and battery life, is down to second place, with sales that have slowed down significantly, going from 55,353 to 39,046.

The normal version of the 3DS is mostly flat in terms of sales, moving 24,623 units to gamers, while the older PlayStation Portable from Sony has also seen an important decrease, going from 23,061 to 17,769.

The new Vita is also down, managing to sell just 7,957 handhelds, a massive decrease compared to the 14,469 of the previous week.

The Xbox 360 also saw an increase in sales and managed to sell 4,894 devices, more than the Nintendo Wii, the PlayStation 2 and older DS versions.

The PlayStation 3 version of the new action shooter Resident Evil 6 from Capcom has managed to top the Japanese video game chart during its first week on sale with 634,933 copies sold.

Second place was captured by another new release, the PS3 version of World Soccer: Winning Eleven 2012 from Konami, which sold 223,884 copies.

The last position on the podium was occupied by yet another new game, Summon Night 3 from Namco Bandai, which sold 51,453 copies.

The rest of the top ten includes: Sol Trigger, the Xbox 360 version of Resident Evil 6, Wagamama Fashion Girls Mode, New Super Maro Bros. 2, SD Gundam G Generation Overworld, F1 2012 and Pokemon Black 2 & White 2.
