The PlayStation 3 is the surprise new leader when it comes to hardware sales in Japan, with sales for all major platforms falling rather quickly after the start of 2011, while Monster Hunter Freedom 3 continues to be the best sold video game on the Japanese market, according to the charts compiled by Media Create.

The PlayStation 3 home console from Sony has managed to sell 59,612 units, down from 76,422 during the previous week, but its good performance is only down to the drops seen in sales of all other hardware platforms that are tracked.

Second spot went to the Nintendo Wii, which managed to move 56,547 devices during the seven down period, again down from more than 77,000, while third place has been captured by the LL version of the DSi handheld, which has registered a drop in sales to 44,122 down from 47,798.

The DS also saw a decrease of about 10,000 units to reach 38,486, but it still managed to sell more units than the PlayStation Portable from Sony, which was the biggest loser of the week, reaching sales of just 28,757 from 99,703.

The PSP Go also lost half its sales, while the DS Lite, the Xbox 360 and the PS3 saw a small increase.

Monster Hunter Freedom 3 for the PSP from Capcom managed to sell 133,562 units for the week, marching on to the 5 million sales mark and keeping the number one spot in the video game chart, with Donkey Kong Country Returns from Nintendo for the Wii is in second place with sales of 66,551.

Third place was taken by Wii Party, totally replicating the chart seen during the previous week.

The rest of the top ten includes: Pokemon Black and White, Mario Sports Mix, Ni no Kuni: The Ebony Wizard, Dynasty Warriors: Gundam 3, SaGa 3: Jikuu no Hasha - Shadow or Light, The 3rd Birthday and New Super Mario Bros. Wii.
