The Nintendo 3DS handheld might still be the leading video game hardware device selling in Japan, but the newly launched PlayStation Vita from Sony seems to be mounting a comeback and sees quite a boost from the launch of Persona 4 The Golden.

The 3DS, which Nintendo has been ignoring lately as it prepares for the launch of the Wii U home console, has managed to sell 61,793 units during the week that ended on June 17, according to the data coming from Media Create, which is about 3,000 devices less than it did during the previous seven-day period.

The PlayStation Vita has managed to see a spectacular increase in sales, reaching 34,459 units sold coming from 13,383, and it will be interesting to see whether it can sustain this performance.

For the first time in a long time, the PlayStation 3 home console has dropped two third in terms of sales in Japan, moving 14,673 devices to gamers in the week, another slight decline, while the older PSP is continuing its decline, reaching 9,740.

The Nintendo Wii is continuing its own old-age decline, selling just 5,963 units, followed by the PS2, the Xbox 360 from Microsoft and the older versions of the DS.

Persona 4 The Golden, a PlayStation Vita title from Publisher Atlus, has been the bestselling title of the week and sold 137,076 copies during its debut week.

Second place has gone to Dragon Quest Monsters Terry’s Wonderland 3D from Square Enix for the 3DS, which has managed to sell 66,434 copies while the last place on the podium belongs to another new release, Lollipop Chainsaw, with sales of 53,347.

The rest of the top ten is made up of: Tokyo Jungle, Akiba’s Trip Plus, Dragon’s Dogma, Mario Tennis Open, Mario Party 9, Lollipop Chainsaw and Super Mario 3D Land.
