Publisher and console creator Nintendo has dominated video games sales in its native market of Japan, managing to move no less than 12.9 million copies of its titles so far this year, according to a report compiled by a Japanese gaming blog called Oolong Tea with data from the weekly Media Create charts.

Second spot in the chart went to Square Enix, which moved 4.6 million units of its games to customers, while Namco Bandai took third with 3.9 million, closely followed by Konami, with 3.1 million in the same time frame.

Capcom managed to sell 2.8 million units while SEGA managed 2.1 million.

Numbers for some publishers might be under represented because of the fact that only the top 50 titles are taken into account for each week.

It's interesting to note that the first publisher that is not based in Japan to appear in the chart is Take Two Interactive, which is counted as having sold 278,000 units, with most of them easily creditable to Red Dead Redemption.

Electronic Arts comes just one position below, moving 220,000 units, while Microsoft stands on 130,000, most of the linked to Halo: Reach, the last first person shooter in the series created by Bungie.

The most popular platforms for gaming in Japan are the PlayStation Portable from Sony and the Nintendo DS family, both handheld devices, followed by the PlayStation 3 and the PS2.

Nintendo's dominance can be attributed to the way it managed to sell first party titles on both the Wii and the DS, not leaving enough room for other publishers to push their video games on the platforms.

Japanese publishers have recently began to look for expansion possibilities outside of the Japanese market, mostly by creating titles with Western teams taking the lead.

The Japanese market is widely seen as declining in terms of both sales and quality.
