The price cut of about 40 percent that the Nintendo 3DS received on the Japanese market has managed to revive the fortunes of the device and have seen it take the number one position in the hardware chart, as compiled by tracking firm Media Create.

The Nintendo handheld platform has managed to sell 196,077 units during the first week after the price cut was implemented, which is especially impressive when compared to the 4,132 moved during the previous week.

It's unlikely that this level of sales can be maintained in the long term and the next few weeks will show how successful the price cut can be.

The PlayStation Portable from Sony has also managed to increase its sales, going from 35,619 units sold to 40,409 while third place in the hardware chart went to the PlayStation 3 home console, which has also seen a rise of about 2,000 device sold to reach just over 20,000.

The Wii is also on an upward trend while the DS line has seen a decline but is still ahead of the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 2, who have also raised their sales by a couple hundred units.

Monster Hunter Diary: Pokapoka Felyne Village G from publisher Capcom has been the best sold video game on the Japanese market, with 98,269 copies moved to gamers in its first week on sale.

Second place in the chart was taken over by another new entry, Pokemon Rumble Blast for the Nintendo 3DS, which has managed to sell 86,294 copies, ahead of Rhythm Heaven for the Nintendo Wii, which stands on 63,590 in sales.

The rest of the top ten is made up of: Kirby Mass Attack, Uta no Prince-Sama: Repeat, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D, J-League Pro Soccer Club! 7: Euro +, Toriko: Gourmet Survival, Wii Sports Resort Nintendo and Epic Mickey.
