The era of smartphones featuring 2K screens is just kicking off, and it seems that it might not be too long before a larger number of handsets with such displays arrive on selves.

Phones with 2K (aka Quad HD, QHD, or WQHD) screens have already arrived on the market, but more of them are expected to be released, especially now that mass production of such panels is ramping up.

On March 27, Japan Display Inc., a leader in mobile display technologies, unveiled that it was ready to start volume production of its own smartphone screen capable of delivering said resolution.

Moreover, the company unveiled that it expected to start shipping its 5.5-inch WQHD TFT liquid crystal display modules as soon as the next month.

The panel, capable of delivering a 1440 x 2560 pixels resolution, is aimed mainly at leading-edge smartphones. Devices packing it might arrive on the market later this year.

As the company notes, the presence of such a high-resolution screen on a smartphone ensures that users enjoy a great viewing experience when looking at photos and videos while on the go.

“The camera device and image processing technologies incorporated in smartphones are becoming increasingly sophisticated with every day. It is now possible to enjoy high quality images on large displays in excess of 5-inches,” the company said.

The 5.5-Inch WQHD LCD screen from Japan Display is capable of delivering a 538PPI-pixel density, one of the highest in the world. Moreover, the company unveiled that the new panel was produced using the low-temperature poly-silicon (LTPS) technology.

“It reproduces photo images and videos more realistically than in the Full-HD format with a resolution of 1,080 horizontal pixels x 1,920 vertical pixels on smartphone displays,” Japan Display notes (5.5-inch full HD touchscreens can offer only a 401ppi-pixel density).

“With this product as a starter, JDI will be releasing a number of WQHD products in 2014 and it is anticipated that a new leading-edge range will emerge in the smartphone sector.”

The new WQHD screen comes with a 160-degree viewing angle, while also offering improved pixel aperture ratio, thus being capable of achieving high transmittance and low power consumption, it seems.

Additionally, the Japan Display announced that the new product offered the same thinness and compactness that conventional Full-HD TFT liquid crystal display modules can deliver.

What remains to be seen is which handset vendors out there will adopt the new screen, and when exactly 5.5-inch 2K smartphones starts arriving on shelves.
