Jane Fonda was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2010 and, while she hoped she would not die, learning she had the disease confirmed for her that she really was not afraid of death.

The star makes the startling confession in a brand new interview with Oprah Winfrey for Oprah’s Next Chapter on OWN. People magazine has video.

As she puts it, Jane refused to see the breast cancer diagnosis as something negative but rather as her “chance” of relating to millions of other women who battled it.

“[It] was a good test, because I always said I'm not afraid of dying. And I wasn't. I mean, I felt, god, I've just joined a family of millions of women who have gone through this. And how interesting. What a journey this is going to be,” she says.

“[I thought], you know, maybe I'll make it and maybe I won't. I didn't get scared. I hope I don't die. But I'm not scared of dying,” the actress adds with determination.

The full episode airs on OWN this Sunday.
