National Geographic Magazine has been around for 125 years now. However, no Hollywood celebrity has ever made it on the cover of this publication, simply because the movie industry and scientific research are worlds that do not meet.

Until James Cameron came along and bridged this gap between Hollywood and science, that is. Ecorazzi reports that the explorer / movie director is to feature on the cover of National Geographic Magazine's June issue.

Furthermore, he'll be honored alongside BASE jumper Felix Baumgartner, oceanographer Sylvia Earle and philanthropist Howard Buffet during the Magazine's anniversary gala, set to take place in about a month's time.

“We’re not about celebrities, we’re about exploration.”

“James Cameron is the only person who, by himself, has gone to the bottom of the Mariana Trench. He talks the talk and walks the walk,” editor-in-chief Chris Johns explains their decision.
