Jake Gyllenhaal has gone fully Method: not only did he lose a lot of weight for his new role in “Nightcrawler” but he also landed himself in the hospital after getting carried away in an emotional scene and punching a mirror.

Jake is now shooting “Nightcrawler” in Los Angeles: he plays Lou in the movie, a crime reporter who’s as hungry for a good story as he’s literally hungry, the actor explained when asked about why he deemed it necessary to starve himself for the role.

One particular scene ended in bloodshed and a trip to the emergency room because Jake “flipped out” and punched a mirror he should have probably left untouched, an on-set source reveals for People magazine.

“Jake flipped out. His character was looking into a mirror during the scene and punched the mirror in anger and broke it, cutting himself so bad he had to be taken to a hospital,” the insider says. Jake needed several stitches on his hand but returned on set to resume shooting that very day. Talk about dedication.

“The scene was emotionally charged and his character was talking into a mirror and he got so into it, he banged his hands against the mirror and it broke and cut him. It was all the scene and not because he was mad about anything else,” the source adds, hoping to anticipate and deny rumors about Jake having temper issues.

The insider stresses that the incident occurred at the end of a very long and very exhausting (and emotionally draining) 18-hour workday.

The above is in keeping with other reports about Jake’s determination to make a name for himself as a solid, versatile and truly professional thespian. He’s already proven his worth to critics in movies like “Donnie Darko,” “Brokeback Mountain” and the more recent “Prisoners,” but he’s also proven he could carry an action movie or a rom-com.

For “Nightcrawler,” he’s lost about 20 pounds (9.07 kg) already by the oldest and most unhealthy diet in the book, the starvation diet.
