As members of the jailbreak community should know by now, the iPhone Dev Team was able to release a new version of its PwnageTool application yesterday, supporting iOS 4, the newest version of the iPhone operating system from Apple. Updated to version 4.01 in the meanwhile (with no clear indication as to why), PwnageTool can effectively jailbreak iOS 4 for both iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS handsets. However, there are quite a number of catches for each device in part, according to the hackers.

iPhone 3GS is one of the devices supported by PwnageTool 4.01, but only if the user already has it jailbroken under an older version of the iPhone operating system, the Dev Team points out. Moreover, the iPhone 3G also needs to have an old bootrom in order to be jailbreakable under iOS 4 using PwnageTool.

“If you have a Jailbroken iPhone 3GS with the OLD BOOTROM and you DID NOT use Spirit to jailbreak then you can create the ipsw with PwnageTool 4.0 and restore with your jailbroken recovery mode,” the iPhone Dev Team explains. “If you have an iPhone 3GS with the NEW BOOTROM this is NOT supported by PwnageTool 4.0 PwnageTool 4.01,” the hackers warn.

For iPhone 3G owners looking to get up and running with iOS 4 jailbreak-style, even more limitations are listed. According to the infamous team of hackers, “If you have a Jailbroken iPhone 3G at 3.1.2 (but not jailbroken with Spirit) then you should create the ipsw with PwnageTool 4.01 and restore from recovery mode or DFU mode.”

They add, “If you have an out of the box iPhone 3G you should restore using a PwnageTool 4.01 ipsw using DFU mode.” The Team outlines that, “If you have a Jailbroken 3.1.3 iPhone 3G it is very possible that this can fail from recovery mode, if this failure happens you will need to restore using DFU mode.” Finally, the Dev Team touts the newly updated redsn0w jailbreak tool as an alternative for owners of a 3G handset.
