Following the release of blackra1n by geohot, a guy going by the screen name of emac2299 posted a video tutorial explaining how to use the jailbreak tool with a Windows computer and any iPhone or iPod touch model. blackra1n is the first tool that can effectively jailbreak iPhone OS version 3.1.2 and it is available only for Windows at the moment.

The guide in question is filled with information regarding the risks (for ‘unlocked’ users) of updating to iPhone OS 3.1.2 directly via iTunes, as well as information regarding device compatibility with blackra1n. Speaking of which, according to the tutorial, your device must already be connected to the computer as blackra1n is launched. The tool features the simplest of interfaces, with one big, “make it rain” button. Once you press the button, the application shuts down the iPhone, performs the jailbreak automatically, and restarts the device.

Unlike using PwnageTool (which does not only jailbreak, but also unlocks a device for use with any carrier), blackra1n doesn’t require an IPSW file download. The tool simply accesses the software directly inside the device, and performs the jailbreak.

“blackra1n is a 30 second ALL device 3.1.2 jailbreak,” geohot explains on his blog. “Even the ipt3, but the ipt3 is tethered. In order to boot it, just rerun blackra1n. As far as donations go, they are much appreciated, but not until after blackra1n works for you. I never ask for donations before the tool is released,” geohot’s post reads. “Warning 3g and 3gs unlockers, do not upgrade to 3.1.2 using iTunes if you want to keep your unlock,” he adds. “Baseband cannot be downgraded. Check out the dev team's offerings. Also blackra1n doesn't hacktivate.”

The video tutorial can be found below.

Softpedia doesn't condone jailbreaking / unlocking the iPhone / iPod touch or any other device. This article has a purely informational purpose and doesn't, in any way, suggest that you should hack your Apple device. Using hacks may render your device unusable, or may reduce the quality of your experience using the respective device. If you choose to download and install jailbreak tools, you will do so at your own risk. Unlocking / jailbreaking your iPhone / iPod touch may violate your warranty or the EULA with Apple and / or your cellular-service provider.
