Dev Team says “backup your 5.1.1 blobs now while you still can”

The iPhone Dev Team has issued a warning to all iDevice owners with update-itchy fingers looking to jailbreak & unlock their devices in the near future. The infamous team of hackers advises the jailbreak community to back up their SHSH blobs, a set of files that facilitates future hacking.

In a timely post over at the Dev Team blog, the hackers led by Musclenerd are happy to acknowledge the release of iOS 6 from Apple.

But not without placing the usual warning signs on the sides.

Devices capable of running iOS 6.0 have a short window for the 5.1.1 SHSH blob signing, “so it’s very important that you backup your 5.1.1 blobs now while you still can,” the team warns.

“We advise you do it for every device you have,” they add, directing noobs to a tutorial.

There’s some good news too. The team is pleased to inform that “there are some serious deficiences [sic] in the 5.x restore process that are permanently exploitable.”

“They’ll never be fixable by Apple because they’re all self-contained in the 5.x IPSWs,” the team states. They offer a breakdown of the situation which you’re welcome to read through over at their popular blog.

A new version of the redsn0w jailbreak tool will be released “shortly,” the team promises. “In the meantime please be sure you have your 5.1.1 blobs and stay at 5.1.1,” says the team, ending with a “Happy iOS6 day!” greeting.

It’ll be a while before the code-savvy minds at iPhone-Dev manage to achieve a clean, untethered jailbreak for iOS 6. Not to mention the sea of different iDevices that require individual testing.

As always, we’re confident they can pull it off. We hear that the groundwork is already set.
