Thinking it’s ok to talk trash about young stars means dehumanizing them

Jada Pinkett Smith stopped by Good Morning America the other day to promote her new project, “Free Angela Davis and All Political Prisoners,” which she produced with husband Will Smith and Jay-Z.

Above is the official trailer for the documentary, while the video below is of the GMA interview.

After talking about how hard it is to finance such a documentary and why she was set on seeing it made, Jada also shares her opinion on celebrity bullying, a practice that’s really picking up speed these days.

“A lot of it had to do with what I was seeing in the press about Taylor Swift, about Ms. [Quvenzhane] Wallis and Justin Bieber especially,” Jada says of a recent blog post she penned pleading for a bit more respect towards young stars.

“I think we have to be very careful that we’re not creating prejudiced attitudes… that you can justify treating a person lesser than because of certain qualities,” she says.

“So the idea that Justin Bieber is young, famous and rich, so people go, ‘I don’t need to care about Justin Bieber. He’s Justin Bieber. He’s got the whole world.’ [It's] dehumanizing them because of their celebrity,” Jada adds.
