Jada Pinkett Smith shocks: “I had many addictions, of several kinds” when I was young

Jada Pinkett Smith, Will Smith’s wife and an accomplished actress, producer, and musician in her own right, often uses her Facebook page to keep fans up to speed with everything in her life. Her post of a few days ago does a bit more than that.

Written shortly after her 42nd birthday, the post offers a look into a troubled past, one that was marked by “many addictions” and not knowing happiness.

Jada doesn’t go into the specifics of her addictions or other problems, but she does stress she’s happy she managed to overcome her demons to discover – and appreciate – her true self.

“Yesterday I turned one year older, and I reflected on where I have been and where I am now. What I learned about myself is this, when I was younger I was not a good problem solver, meaning I had a very difficult time with dealing with my problems in life,” she writes.

“I had many addictions, of several kinds, to deal with my life issues, but today, at 42, I have my wisdom, my heart and my conscience as the only tools to overcome life's inevitable obstacles. I have become a good problem solver with those tools, and I am damn proud. Thank you for all the love that was given to me for my birthday this year,” Jada continues.

“What I hope is that we all continue to gain healthy understanding that life is really about, solving problems, and also about us learning to become masters at solving them,” she says, thanking her millions of fans for “being there.”

As noted above, Jada frequently uses social media to get in touch with her fans and share some of the obstacles she comes across, particularly how she deals with them, in the hope that her experience might be useful for someone else in the same situation.

Also here, she addressed rumors that she and Will were either getting a divorce or having an open marriage. Neither was true, she said, adding that their marriage was based on complete trust.
