50 years ago, oceanographer Jacques-Yves Cousteau made history by spending a total of 30 days underwater. His grandson, Fabien Cousteau, now wishes to honor him by breaking this record.

DNA India says that Fabien Cousteau is dead set on spending a total of 31 days inside an underwater laboratory whose size is about the same as that of a bus.

The laboratory will be submerged in the Atlantic Ocean, fairly close to Florida Keys.

“Not only will our endeavour break new ground in ocean exploration, but it will also coincide with the 50th anniversary of a monumental legacy left by my grandfather.”

“Mission 31 will expand his mission by one full day and 30 feet [9.14 meters] deeper. We will also broadcast every second on multiple channels exposing the world to the adventure, risk, and mystique of what lies beneath,” Fabien Cousteau said in a statement.

While underwater, Jacques-Yves Cousteau's grandson and his colleagues will research the effects that climate change and global warming have on marine ecosystems.

They are scheduled to begin training for their mission this coming September.
