To paraphrase many angry Tom Clancy fans out there, Tom Clancy must be rolling in his grave to see what Hollywood is doing with his popular Jack Ryan character. A first trailer for “Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit” is out and it’s making fans very unhappy.

Jack Ryan first appeared in Clancy’s 1984 novel “The Hunt for Red October” and he’s been making plenty of appearances in both literature and film. The story was always set in the post-Cold War era, which, as you can see, is no longer the case in Kenneth Branagh’s reboot.

“Shadow Recruit” stars Chris Pine as a Jack Ryan who is just beginning his career with the CIA, Keira Knightley as his girlfriend, Kevin Costner as his CIA boss, and Branagh himself as the Russian villain.

The trailer makes it look like your average action thriller, only with better actors, which is exactly what got Tom Clancy’s fans up in arms. However, I imagine that if you haven’t read the books yet, this will leave you cold.

“Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit” will be out this Christmas.
