Unusual statements from the Harry Potter author, JK Rowling.
She has slammed the actual trend to clean children's literature of anything that might upset the little ones, saying that, even for a child, getting upset is a necessary part of growing up.
Under Rowling's opinion, kids that are only experiencing smooth and positive feelings when small, will not be able to deal with problems when they reach adulthood.
She says:
"I feel very strongly that there is a move to sanitize literature because we're trying to protect children, not from the grizzly facts of life, but from their own imaginations.
We need to fear and need to confront fear in a controlled environment and that's a very important part of growing up.
The child that has been protected from the dementors in fiction, I would argue, is much more likely to fall prey to them later in life in reality."
The latest Harry Potter movie, "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire", was rated 12A; that is children under 12 cannot see it without an adult, being considered so far
the scariest in the series.
