Some time ago, word got out that scheduling conflicts might force writer-director J.J. Abrams to choose between doing the third “Star Trek” movie and the seventh “Star Wars” film planned by Disney, to which he had already been attached.

At the time, it was believed that J.J. Abrams would drop out of “Star Wars” but, as it turns out, he’s ditching the other franchise instead, as he confirms in a new Collider interview.

“It’s a little bittersweet. But, I will say that I’m going to be producing the movie,” Abrams reveals.

“It definitely feels like the right time to let someone come in and do their own thing. I certainly don’t want someone to come in and try to do what I would have done,” the director adds.

His 2009 “Star Trek” and this year’s follow-up, “Star Trek Into Darkness,” fared excellently with critics and fans alike, so I believe I’m not alone in saying he will be missed.

On the other hand, I can’t wait to see what he’ll do with “Star Wars.”
