Name change

Sony held a presentation at the GDC meet up and the biggest news coming out of the event has been that the Sony motion tracking controller has been finally given an official name, the PlayStation Move. It seems that previous rumors, which pointed to names like Arc and Gem, were not accurate and that the company has been keeping the real name under wraps until now.

Sony also revealed that it plans to sell the new Move in three distinct packages: a standalone controller only offered to those who already own a PlayStation 3 home console and an Eye camera; a bundle, which includes the camera, required to operate the system, the Move and a game; and a final one delivering the motion tracking system, a game and a PS3.

It's not clear how much the PlayStation Move itself will cost but the bundle options that include a camera, the device and a game should cost the player less than 100 dollars on launch day.

Peter Dille, who is the chief of marketing at Sony Computer Entertainment of America, has said that “We like to think this is the next generation of motion gaming,” emphasizing that the new controller will have the same latency as the now available DualShock 3 and stating that a lot of the players who have seen the Nintendo Wii as too underpowered might be attract to the PlayStation 3 and Move combo.

Sony is also adamant that the launch of the PlayStation Move will rival that of the original PlayStation 3 in terms of size, with the company treating the whole affair as a new console launch. An aggressive marketing push will begin in the summer, with retail channels, television and online ads being used to familiarize potential customers with the Move and show off the fresh games that will support the Sony motion tracking system, like SOCOM 4 or LittleBigPlanet.
